Gristedes traces its roots back to 1891, when the Gristede brothers opened a Midtown East store upon arriving from Germany. The chain expanded throughout the city and beyond, being acquired by John Catsimatidis' Red Apple Group in the 1980s. The chain also acquired Sloan's Supermarkets in the 1990s, although Gristedes has been shrinking for decades. Dating back to 1932, D'Agostino was sold to the Red Apple Group in 2016.
