Foodtown originated as a cooperative of New Jersey markets back in the 1940s, called Twin County Grocers. Twin County never had as large a New York City presence as some of its native competitors like Associated or Key Food, but the company was dissolved following a series of scandals in the 1990s. By the end of that decade, the group re-formed as Foodtown Inc., which transitioned to Allegiance Retail in 2012. Today, the Allegiance Retail cooperative represents stores under several different banners, including Pathmark, Freshtown, and Gristedes, but Foodtown continues to be the flagship banner.
