Cooperative/Supplier: Associated Supermarket Group
The first Compare Foods opened on Long Island in 1989, affiliated with Associated Food Stores (now the Associated Supermarket Group). Its original owners wanted a brand different from Associated for Latin American-focused stores. The brand later was made available to other Associated owners, expanding its reach from the immediate New York City area to the entire Eastern Seaboard. Although the original owners have moved their northeastern stores out of Compare Foods and joined Key Food, under the name Gala Foods, other operators still own Compare Foods stores from New England to the Carolinas.

Notes: Donald Trump's father, Fred Trump, established the Trump Super Market at this location in June of 1933, one of the earliest self-service supermarkets in the region. After just four months, Trump sold the store to King Kullen, a pioneer of self-service supermarkts based in nearby Jamaica. Today, the store is called "Compare Food," as opposed to the official name "Compare Foods."
