Hi Jong Lee started Food World in 2001, taking over a former Big R Food Warehouse in South Jamaica. Lee expanded the brand, but sold several locations in 2020. One is still called Food World, in Brooklyn, despite being under new ownership. Today, most of Lee's business is in SuperFresh stores in New Jersey, but he still owns two Food World stores in the city.
